New York, New York Holidays
The concrete jungle that dreams are made of.. theres nothing you can’t do.. when you are in New York. Alicia Keys sang it well.. this city is a must visit for everyone once, there really is nothing you can’t do!
New York itself really needs no introduction, the city that never sleeps seen on movie and tv screens across the world. First time visitors to this immense city will be wowed by its scale; everything is BIG! Arriving into the city by yellow Manhattan cab is one of the most amazing experiences, the skyline is out of this world. Passing through its streets and seeing those famous landmarks is truly memory making, the sights, the sounds and the smells of the city will stay with you for many years to come.
With so much to see and do its pretty important to plan your time in New York well. It would be impossible to cram everything into a stay here. Great events happen throughout the year in NYC and you may want to factor this into plans for your trip; of course a Christmas trip wouldn’t be complete without a trip to see the Rockefeller tree or to enjoy the ice skating.
Deciding where to eat and drink in New York can be a challenge, with every type of cuisine available. Specific areas of Manhattan are known for their food; with Little Italy and Chinatown being popular spots. Expect to find food in New York from every part of the world. Food trends are forever changing and what’s hot right now differs frequently, local guides like Time Out will tell you what restaurants are the best to eat in and which bars are the hippest right now. Of course you might want to try some NYC staples; hot dogs, pizza slices, pretzels and cheesecake. Head to one of the famous bakeries such as the Carlos Cake Boss and indulge in a sweet treat.
Its not surprising that the Big Apple has a huge choice of luxury, unique and outstanding hotels. Choose from a hip hotel in a cool neighbourhood, or a budget friendly place Midtown. Staying for a special occasion or a treat you might want to choose a high end hotel or an iconic spot such as the Waldorf Astoria or The Plaza. Many hotels offer the possibility of suites for family getaways.
New York is perhaps the most versatile city for holidays as it is suitable for all types of visitors. With lots of options of things to do for couples of all ages and for groups of friends. Families too are well catered for with a range of exciting things for children to do although days are very busy and it is maybe more suited to families with slightly older children.
What to do on your holiday in New York.
The list of things to do in New York is potentially endless. Here I have highlighted some of the most popular ways to spend your time in the Big Apple.
- Pay your respects at 9/11 Museum, one of the most humbling and captivating experiences of my life. This captivating memorial to the victims of the terror attack is a must visit destination in the city. Combine it with a trip t the top of the World Trade Center; arrive early in the morning and have the viewing deck to yourself almost.
- See New York from above and take a helicopter trip over the Hudson and above Manhattan for a birds eye view of this amazing city.
- Watch a Broadway Show; there are 41 theatres to choose from on Broadway, the oldest opened in 1908. Spend an evening here watching everything from The Lion King to The Phantom of the Opera. Enjoy a pre or post theatre dinner at one of the many restaurants in the streets around the theatres.
- Get the best from the skyline; watch it from a rooftop bar with an ice cold cocktail in hand! Some of the stunning venues have pools, perfect for hot day. Or chill out and have a rooftop brunch.
- Head to fashionable Chelsea Market and enjoy some sensational food from one of the many small eateries on offer. Walk your lunch off by taking a stroll down the Highline a 2.3km linear park floating over Manhattan from trendy Chelsea, through Greenwich park known to locals as the Village and ending up in SoHo.
- Cycle your way around Central Park; a fun and active way to see the park. Go alone or take a guided tour seeking out the spots seen in the movies, and the John Lennon monument.
- Walk across Brooklyn Bridge stopping to take pictures as you go, at every angle! When in Brooklyn head down to the famous DUMBO spot and get that iconic shot.
- Take in Lady Liberty from the water. There are lots of ways to do this; choose an organised tour passing by Governors Island, a brunch or a sunset cruise or alternatively head over on the free ferry to Staten Island.
- If you are heading to the top of the World Trade Centre early in the morning then head to the top of the Empire State Building at disk for a different perspective of the city; it feels very magical!
- Delve into the musical legacy of Harlem and enjoy an insider tour plus a live jazz show at an iconic venue complete with dinner and drinks.
- Shop till you drop on 5th Avenue where you will find high end brands or head to Madison Avenue for a designer fix. Be sure to shop in famous New York stores Bloomingdales or Macy’s.. it might be worth travelling with an empty suitcase to bring your new haul back home!
- Be wowed by the neon lights in Times Square sometimes referred to as the Crossroads of the World, wander through and marvel at its spectacle. The place is buzzing; unless it is very early in the morning! Your only problem is which way to look first.
