The Dominican Republic is a sunshine and beach lovers dream. Miles of pristine white sands that are fringed with coconut filled swaying palm trees. Year round sunshine and tropical temperatures make this a perfect destination if you are a sun, sea and sand lover.
The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. It is one of the Caribbeans largest islands offering a beautiful and diverse landscape. For many years it was regarded as the poor relation in the Caribbean and looked over as a destination in favour of other islands; but things have changed. The Dominican Republic has so much to offer its visitors, many find its pocket friendly prices enables them to enjoy a level of luxury in a stunning Caribbean setting that they would not be able to achieve on one of the more expensive neighbouring islands.
Most holidays are hotel based in the Dominican Republic centering around the large resorts of Punta Cana and Bavaro and then the smaller resort of La Romano on the South Coast. Here you will find sprawling luxury resorts many of them offering all inclusive drinking, dining and entertainment with superb onsite facilities. There are hotels to suit all types of travellers; couples, groups of friends and families can choose their perfect resort with the facilities that are important to them.
Whilst it might be tempting to stay within your hotel on your Dominican Republic holiday step away and you will find a huge range of activities, places to visit and experiences that will truly make memories to last a lifetime. Along the Bavaro Beach coastline there are many world class golf courses to be enjoyed, go inland for zip lining and off roading in the mangrove forest, or head onto the beaches and enjoy watersports and marine life.
What to do on your holiday to the Dominican Republic
- Take a boat trip to Saona Island… this is truly paradise personified. The island is a nature reserve; it has untouched beaches, swaying palm trees and the most beautiful turquoise waters you will ever see. Swimming in the natural lagoon there was one of the highlights of my time in this beautiful country. Eating local food from a restaurant on the beach is also a must do.
- Wake before dawn and take a head out into the countryside to take a hot air balloon ride as the sun rises. Having done this myself I can confirm it was one of the most spectacular and enjoyable experiences in my life. Watching the sleep Dominican Republic farms slowly awaken as the balloon slowly glides across the sky is memory making. Take breakfast with your balloonist and their family after and enjoy a glass of champagne as is customary after a flight.
- Visit Santa Domingo, the capital of the island and head for the Zona Colonial a Unesco World Heritage Site that covers just over a square mile. Here you will find the America first cathedral; Alcázar de Colón. Santa Domingo has such an old world feel to it with narrow pedestrian only streets and old colonial buildings. You could jump on the Chu Chu Colonial Train for a guided tour.
- Explore the lush interior of the Dom Rep with its sweeping sugar cane, coffee and cocoa plantations. There are many different tour options to take you resort to spots where the scenery really is spectacular. Plan it right and you could be taking in the most beautiful mountains and waterfalls too.
- Head to the Gastroatelier Restaurant at the Sivory Punta Cana Boutique hotel; the only AAA Four-Diamond-rated restaurant in the area. Here master chefs conjour up taste tickling dishes which are a gastronomical delight. There is also an extensive cellar from which to choose your accompanying wine.
- Enjoy a day on the beach at Bavaro and be spoilt for choice with a huge range of watersports on offer. This beautiful beach which stretches for 12 miles has everything you can imahine from banana boats to parasailing. Alternatively head out onto the ocean for some deep sea fishing with a chance of catching marlin or yellow fin tuna.
- Chill in your resort and enjoy all of the facilities on offer there. Spend some serious self care time having a spa treatment, or enjoy a day relaxing in a beach cabana with an ice cold frozen daquiri and start that book you have been meaning to.
