For such a small island of just 14 miles by 11 miles Antigua has a lot of beaches; 365 of them to be exact or one for every day of the year. With pretty coves and picture perfect sugar white sand they are a beach lovers heaven. Inland you will find rolling hills, colourful houses and magnificient views aplenty. Antigua is paradise; it is destined to take your breath away and no doubt steal a little of your heart!
As the island was once a British Colony and British influences are never too far away. Locals enjoy playing cricket, and many hotels offer afternoon tea. It also has a rich maritime heritage and history lovers will enjoy visits to Nelsons Dockyard. Far from being stuffy though; the island has a very laid back and relaxing Caribbean vibe.
Its luxury hotels and resorts are peppered around the coast from smaller more intimate hotels to large and lively resorts. For those wanting more privacy there is also the option to choose a private villa. As each property occupies its own part of the island transport is required to get out and about with taxi’s being widely available. If you prefer to stay in resort you will find many are all inclusive or have a range of dining options including fine dining. You could quite easily relax in resort for the duration of your stay if that is your choice.
Antigua can be as lively or as relaxed as you choose. It makes a perfect destination for couples, honeymooners, families or groups of friends with so many accommodation and activity choices. Some resorts offer larger suites or villas suitable for families or groups of friends to share. Its beaches are so varied there is something to suit everyone with livelier stretches of sand with lots of bars, or sheltered beaches with calmer waters perfect for families.
How to spend your holiday in Antigua
- Take in the view of the English Harbour from Shirley Heights which is particularly spectacular at sunset. You could follow the nature trail up from the harbour and be rewarded for your efforts by the end view. There is also a lively sunset barbeque on Sundays.
- Enjoy world class sailing; time your visit right and you could be there for Antigua Sailing week which happens late April / early May and brings a Carnival feel to the island. The event includes various races, day and night time parties including the Lazy Beach Day party where it is said the rum and fun never ends.
- Visit the islands tiny neighbour Barbuda; reached by high speed ferry in around 90 minutes. With pink coral and soft sand beaches that rival its bigger neighbours and its stunning natural beauty Barbuda remains rather untouched.
- Immerse yourself in the culture, food and flavours of the Caribbean by taking party in a cooking class. Learn about the local cuisine before cooking a two course meal using locally farmed produce. And of course at the end of the class sit down and enjoy the food you have prepared.
- Marvel at the marine life; take a boat out and snorkel a shipwreck where you will find the ocean packed full of tropical fish. You may also spot a turtle. Antigua has an almost unbroken off shore reef around the island so is a perfect spot for diving too.
- Shop till you drop at the Heritage Quay Complex in St Johns which is a favourite with cruise ship passengers looking for designer clothing and electronic bargains. Alternatively head to Redcliff Quay where you will find small boutiques, local crafts and jewellery shops.
